C-USA Pitcher of the Week Nominees

Player: Hunter Stanley School:_Southern Miss

Supporting Information for Pitcher of the Week Nominee: Hunter Stanley opened the Middle Tennessee series by limiting the Blue Raiders to three base runners, which included two hits and one to reach via a throwing error. Stanley, who recorded a career-high 16 strikeouts, retired the first 16 batters he faced before giving up a double that got over a little bit of the first base bag. The runner later was thrown out stealing ending the only legitimate offensive threat by the Blue Raiders in the contest. In the game, Stanley only had one 3-ball count and that was to the second hitter of the game, who he struck out. Stanley’s strikeout total tied for the fourth best in school history with Ed Assaf (vs. Spring Hill, 4/6/68) and Chuck Shive (vs. Towson, 3/19/89).

Player: Walker Powell
School:_Southern Miss

Supporting Information for Pitcher of the Week Nominee: Walker Powell threw the first no-hitter since the trio of Gabe Shepard, Cody Carroll and Hunter Stanley tossed one since the 2019 Conference USA Tournament in a 6-0 win over Rice. It also marked the first Southern Miss complete-game no-hitter since Cliff Russum accomplished that feat against Eastern Illinois on March 13, 2004. Powell, a senior from Fayetteville, Ark., allowed just a leadoff walk to start the second and stranded that runner at second base. His 12 strikeouts established a career high for Powell, coming on the team’s senior day. Powell is the Division I career active leader in victories with 28. He also ranks No. 3 on the school’s career charts for wins, trailing only Todd McInnis (33) and Darrell Lindsey (29).

Notes
* Southern Miss registered its second four-game sweep of a league opponent (UAB) and won its fifth league series out of seven, also tying one and losing one. The Golden Eagles, now with 20 league wins, have reached 20-or-more C-USA wins in each of the last five league seasons and eight times overall. The school has also qualified for the league tournament later this month and is the only program to reach that event in each year that they have held it dating back to its inaugural affair in 1996.
* The Golden Eagles outscored the Blue Raiders 26-6 over the weekend behind four strong starting pitching performances that included 29 innings of work, allowing one run (earned), on seven hits and one walk with 33 strikeouts. The starts included a nine-inning performance with no runs allowed and 16 strikeouts, a seven-inning no-hitter, another seven-inning complete-game shutout and a strong six-inning outing. Southern Miss has now beaten Middle Tennessee 21-straight times and is 21-1 all-time in C-USA games against the Blue Raiders.

* The Golden Eagles are now 33-15 on the season, having reached 30 or more wins in 19-straight seasons. Their consecutive string of 30-win seasons ranks fifth-best among Division I programs.
* Since the school started playing in its current facility, Pete Taylor Park, the Golden Eagles have won 20 or more home games there 31 of the last 38 campaigns, having total 22 in 2021.

* The team has played nine doubleheaders in 2021 and have posted a 13-5 record in those contests, sweeping four and splitting five.

* Catcher Andrew Stanley recorded his first career home run that banged high off the scoreboard in the doubleheader on Saturday and became the sixth Golden Eagle to register their initial home run with the program this year. The others are Dustin Dickerson, Brady Faust, Billy Garrity Blake Johnson and Slade Wilks.
