Our program was riding high and tearing through opponents....9-3 wasn't good enough...why did it fall?

Horace Fleming? Was de facto fired ....

Shelby Thames..hated by the faculty....

G man...lay much of the blame at his feet....

Saunders...nail in coffin....


Did I miss anyone?

If Giannini chooses to go to Dallas and play Penn State after the Championship, he probably still has a job and we probably hire Blake Anderson instead of EJ. Who knows what could have happened?

To this day I still don't understand what occurred in 2011-2012.....my understanding is that:

(1)G chose to go to Hawaii Bowl which made Saunders mad and forced his resignation...

(2)Saunders chose ELLLLLLLLLLLLOS....

(3) Saunders wanted Hammond as the next AD but certain members on the IHL board did not so they forced her to resign...Hammond only gets 1 year contract....

(4)The great 0fer 2012 season occurred which caused ELLLLLLLLLLLLOS to be fired by Hammond with AKL's approval...
Deadspin(FWIW better than the local media) said ELLLLLLLLLLLLOS could have stayed if he fired his staff thankfully his stubborness got the best of him...

The bottom line is if Bill M turns out to be another G man the program is toast....

I hope somebody writes a book on what really happened for USM sports during this time period. I would love to read it.

JMO:
* The lady President, who knows nothing about athletics, didn't like the AD and fired him.
* That same lady President, who knows nothing about athletics, hired the next FB coach...EJ.
* EJ was so well liked and respected by his peers...SARCASM... He couldn't hire any quality assistant coaches. (To his credit he has been a good DC, but his personality is so gruff...No people skills. Knowledgeable coaches did not want to work for him)
* EJ was not a recruiter and at this level the HC has to be a salesman and darn good recruiter. At South Carolina he didn't recruit. He would only talk to the 4 and 5 star recruits while they were on campus.

In short... I think Aunt Martha did this.

She hired EJ, who hired HS coaches, and college coaches who were out of work and looking to catch on with anybody. And a real estate agent for a Strength coach.

** I really think Buckley hired the Offensive coaches and the strength coach.

At the press conference that ELOSS was hired, there were two quotes that really stuck out:

"At Southern Miss we know a winner when we see one. The individual you are about to meet is a winner." - Martha Saunders

"With my time here, it will be the goal to take this program to a BCS bowl and come out with a victory." - ELOSS

Bad leadership has really hurt our university.

You were close on (1) but what made Saunders mad was that she felt she had been lied to about how the decision was made to go to the Hawaii Bowl. I understood that G told her that the team voted and chose the Hawaii Bowl. Players stated they were not asked. You don't lie to your boss, no matter how incompetent she is.
