I actually wondered the same thing. I heard the announcers suggesting that Monken/Lindsey wanted Mullens in because they weren't able to run everything they could against State....so they were doing it for experience. I can kind of accept that up to the point where the 3rd quarter ended and we were up 49-3. I can't buy that Mullens still needed to be out there in the 4th quarter. I like Monken, but I wonder how he would have explained it if Mullens had received a season-ending injury while playing in the 4th quarter?
We heard about how close the QB competition was all through the summer. Monken even said he was considering playing both QBs just before the season started. Seems you would want to give your backup some respectable game experience. If I'm not mistaken, I think Matthews was on the field for the very last play. That's kind of insulting.
