Southern Miss Baseball Starts Longest Road Swing of Season Tuesday at South Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The longest road stretch of the season gets started for Southern Miss Tuesday night when they travel to nationally ranked South Alabama for a 6:30 p.m., contest at Eddie Stanky Field in Mobile.
The Golden Eagles, which swept nationally ranked Mississippi State to start the 2018 season at home last weekend, play their next nine games on the road before returning home March 9 against Georgia Southern.
In the opening series, Southern Miss outscored the Bulldogs 23-6 and two of its players were recognized by Conference USA with weekly honors for their play in the three wins. Junior third baseman Luke Reynolds, who hit .600 with two doubles, a home run and five RBI won the Hitter of the Week, while All-American Nick Sandlin garnered the Pitcher of the Week accolade on the strength of seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts and no walks in his first career start.
For their play, the Golden Eagles either jumped spots or entered three major national polls. The team enjoyed its best preseason ranking on No. 21 byBaseball America and moved up four places No. 17, while they moved up to its highest ranking of No. 13 by Collegiate Baseball and entered the D1Baseball.com ranking at No. 15.
Southern Miss recorded double-digit hits in two of three contests against the Bulldogs and post a team .296 batting coming into the USA game. The pitching staff limited MSU to six runs and have a 2.00 ERA through three games.
The Jaguars lead the overall series 61-36 dating back to the 1967 season. The Golden Eagles, though, won all three games over USA last season, including one in NCAA Hattiesburg Regional and seven of the last 10 contest.
Following the USA contest, the Golden Eagles return to action this weekend when they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas, to play in the SFA Tournament. Southern Miss plays South Dakota State at 3 p.m., Friday, before taking on UT Arlington, Saturday, at 11 a.m., before finishing up play Sunday, at 4 p.m., against host SFA.
