There have been other seasons that hurt me but 1989 was the first to do it. 1988 had been such a fun season that my hopes were sky high for 1989. We had a really hard schedule and it was just too much for us. The season started with an incredible upset of #6 Florida State. And then,..

One of my friends had an apartment in a house across Hwy 49 from the Rock and we would tailgate there and then walk across to go to the game. It was a beautiful fall day and we were playing Mississippi State at home. It was a great atmosphere. And then we lost. It was the first time we had lost to them in a while. It had already been announced there would not be a new contract and this was the last of the two games on the current one. It had been decided the last two would be moved from the Jackson stadium to a home and home. Brutal loss after the high of beating FSU.

The next three games were at Auburn TCU and Texas A&M. All losses. The TCU game the only one that was close.

Then we beat Tulane at home. We beat Louisville at Louisville.

Then we lost to a Brian Mitchell led Southwestern Louisiana at home in a close game.

Then we beat Memphis at Memphis.

Went to Alabama and lost.

And finished the season beating East Carolina at home.

If I remember right the FSU game was a home game we sold and was played in Jacksonville.

The away schedule was brutal. Auburn, TCU, Texas A&M, Louisville, Memphis and Alabama.

Home we had Mississippi State, Tulane, Louisiana Lafayette and East Carolina.

We ended the season 5-6.
