FIU has just hired new football coach...

A serial cheater, but, deep ties to the high schools in Dade County area. Davis has recruited, signed and coached 28 NFL 1st round draft picks. Business just picked up at FIU. He won't get the elite talent from that area, but, he will get his share of the above average guys.

FIU hires a guy who has been a head coach in the NFL, Miami Hurricanes, and North Carolina. Southern Miss hires a SWAC coach. Damn. Just damn.

FIU is located in Miami and has an enrollment of 55,000 students, making FIU the second largest university in the state of Florida...(I believe).

You are correct. It is also 60% hispanic. Enrollment has very little to do with their hire vs our hire. We went the cheap route and went for the guy who will stay instead of going and getting a young guy who would have built on what TM did last season, not tear it down to reinvent the wheel like the current guy.

Gator, to me enrollment is the key to most of the problems we have when we compare yourselves to several of our conference mates and others for that matter. Which is why our university leadership has bothered me so much.
Can you just imagine what we could do with another $16 million in athletic funds yearly from activity fees if our enrollment was as high as theirs.

I think a lot of folks hear like to throw out FIU / FAU interchangeably and dismiss FIU as a "directional-type" school.
55K students is almost four times the enrollment of Southern Miss, and larger than the University of Texas. Even more important is the fact that FIU is in Miami, which is where Davis coached previously.

It is easy to have "high" enrollment numbers when you have 3 schools in the state that basically accept and enroll anyone who can sign their name, FIU, UCF & USF. FIU has a 49% graduation rate. Throw in the Bright Futures program for free tuition and......

I am not saying Butch Davis should have been hired here. Imo it is alarming that a school like FIU who has never put a lot of $$$ or emphisis on athletics, just made a move like this. While Southern Miss, the bellcow, the leader, the gold standard of CUSA since it's creation, hires a SWAC coach, who btw was a mediocre defensive assistant coach at the FBS level, before becoming a SWAC HC. The landscape of college football is changing at a alarming pace. We have fallen way behind and frankly the JH hire was a swing and a miss at a time a grand slam was required.
