Did ULM(NELA) shut out USM back in 1984?

I think that's when former Pittsburgh Steeler QB Bubby Brister was QB for Northeast Louisiana!

NeLa went on to win the IAA national championship. That loss sent the program into a spiral not recovered until Favre. Beat Bama but can't defeat Louisiana Tech...beat Old Miss but can't defeat NeLa. Remember ULM coach Viator was very successful at McNeese State. I thought Hop was going to be ULMs coach.

It was Northwestern Louisianna State that beat southern Miss 22 - 0 back in 1984.

1984 (4-7) Coach Jim Carmody Captains: Sam DeJarnette, Richard Byrd, and Greg Haeusler

9/8 Georgia L/19-26 Athens, Ga. 81,421
9/15 Louisiana Tech W/34-0 Hattiesburg, Miss. 28,842
9/22 Auburn L/12-35 Auburn, Ala. 24,841
9/29 Memphis L/13-23 Hattiesburg, Miss. 26,831
10/6 Mississippi State L/18-27 Jackson, Miss. 50,136
10/13 Tulane L/7-35 New Orleans, La. 30,764
10/20 Mississippi W/13-10 Jackson, Miss. 57,000
10/27 Louisiana-Lafayette L/7-13 Lafayette, La. 19,605
11/3 Northwestern (La.) State (HC) L/0-22 Hattiesburg, Miss. 24,682
11/10 East Carolina W/31-27 Greenville, S.C. 21,237
11/17 Louisville W/34-27 Hattiesburg, Miss. 15,900

It was pretty bad at the time. I think we started Tommy Compton at QB. He was supposed to be the next "Reggie". Not even close. Carmody lost every bit of Collins momentum. Curly Hallman would be another 3 years away.

The two things Carmody did was beat State and Ole Miss and found Favre.
He also ended Alabama's 56-game home winning streak in 1982, which turned out to be Bear Bryant's last game. And he was the architect of the Big Nasty defense which was synonymous with USM football for couple of decades.

I just looked at my Rock Solid Southern Miss football book by John Cox and he has it as a 57 game winning streak at Bryant Denny stadium that rookie head coach Jim Carmody helped lead in Southern Miss 38-29 victory!
