USM RENOVATING STADIUM PLAZA ON HATTIESBURG CAMPUS
By WXXV - July 8, 20200

A renovated plaza between M.M. Roberts Stadium (“The Rock”) and the University Union at The University of Southern Mississippi Hattiesburg campus is scheduled for completion by September.

The University of Southern Mississippi is renovating a much-traveled area of campus that will create another level of engagement for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

The University Union/Stadium Plaza located on the West side of M.M. Roberts Stadium is being overhauled to enhance football game day experiences at The Rock, while providing an appealing courtyard for the campus community. The $2.4 million project, approved by the state IHL Board, is scheduled for completion by September.

Dr. Denny Bubrig, Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs at USM, notes that the plaza renovation project sprang from discussions at the university about the need for an upgrade to the space.

“Spatially, the plaza is a high visible, centrally located option that has supported small-scale programming in the recent past, and we felt like we could do better,” said Bubrig. “On completion of the Joe Paul Theater, we were looking for the next project and many pointed this way as not only a prime student engagement area, but also a front door to USM for many of the greater USM community.”

Key features of the renovated plaza include:

Installation of a stage area to accommodate live musical entertainment
Seven 25-foot X 50-foot banners featuring iconic scenes from the Hattiesburg campus
A ramp and seating wall
Increased lighting
Digital wayfinding
Covered bicycle racks
Significant increase in outdoor seating.

The project’s highlight will be a customized Golden Eagle head logo made from colored brick pavers assembled like a jigsaw puzzle at the center of the plaza walkway.

“This is an exciting project for the university. The renovation of this plaza will provide for a plethora of student engagement activities, create aesthetically pleasing outdoor seating and dining areas and enhance the Southern Miss game day experience,” said Dr. Chris Crenshaw, Vice President for Facilities Planning and Management. “I am really looking forward to our students, faculty, staff and fans being able to enjoy this courtyard once it is completed.”

I am done

I am done with sports, football especially. This BLM crap and now the stupid NCAA's ruling on the state flag is my tipping point. I just don't care anymore. No more money from me at any level, at any venue, for any sport. My subscription to BGN expires in a few months anyway. I've enjoyed my time here at this site and wish you all the best. Adios guys, it's been a great ride.

Swayze Bozeman Named to Wuerffel Trophy Preseason Watch List

FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. - The Wuerffel Trophy announced its Preseason Watch List Thursday afternoon of 114 players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and Southern Miss senior linebacker Swayze Bozeman is the school’s nominee for this award.

The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented each February in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.

Jaylond Adams Named to Paul Hornung Award Preseason Watch List

If anyone was questioning what happened to Jaylond Adams or is he still on the team, well here is a confirmation from Southern Miss.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Louisville Sports Commission today named 50 multi-talented college football players to the 2020 Watch List for the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, including Southern Miss redshirt junior Jaylond Adams.

Adams, a wide receiver/kick and punt returner, earned PFF second-team All-America honors at returner last season on the strength of two kickoff returns and one punt return for a touchdown during the year.

The Adamsville, Ala., native opened the 2019 campaign by returning a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown and then later scored on an 80-yard punt return versus Alcorn State en route to being named the C-USA Special Teams Player of the Week.

His kickoff return for a score was the first for a Golden Eagle since the 2015 season and his punt return for a TD was the first since the opening game the previous season.

Adams became the first Southern Miss player to have a touchdown on both a kickoff and punt return in the same season since 2009 and marked the first time a Golden Eagle recorded two special team return touchdowns in the same game since James Henry accomplished that feat against UTEP in the 1988 Independence Bowl. Adams also holds the distinction of being the only Southern Miss player to return a kickoff and a punt for a score in the same game.

The second kickoff return for a touchdown came two weeks later when Adams returned one for 100 yards at Troy, tying both the school’s season and career record for kickoff touchdown returns (two). He also collected 11 catches for 180 yards in that contest, finishing with 322 all-purpose yards – the second most ever in a game by a Golden Eagle.

In addition, Adams ranked third on the team in catches with 48 for 483 yards and two touchdowns.

Adams missed the final four games with injury after earning midseason All-America honors by The Athletic (2nd team returner), Sporting News (returner) and ESPN (kick returner).

The Paul Hornung Award, now in its 11th season, is given annually to the most versatile player in major college football by the Louisville Sports Commission and football legend and Louisville native Paul Hornung. The winner and his family will be honored at the annual Paul Hornung Award dinner at the Galt House Hotel in downtown Louisville on March 2021.

More information about the Award can be found at www.paulhornungaward.com.
